About Wokingham United Charities

Wokingham United Charities is a long established charitable organisation, with origins dating back to 1451, serving residents across Wokingham Borough. We manage a substantial endowed fund to support people experiencing poverty, hardship or distress, and operate Wokingham Almshouses at Westende, providing 27 modern, self contained flats for older residents at below market maintenance contributions.

We are a values driven organisation with strong governance, registered with the Charity Commission and structured as a Company Limited by Guarantee. Our team works in a supportive, community focused environment dedicated to providing high quality accommodation and practical assistance for vulnerable residents.

Role Overview

We are recruiting a practical, organised and people focused Facilities Supervisor to oversee the day to day maintenance, safety and smooth running of our almshouse community. The role ensures that our buildings, communal areas and grounds remain safe, well maintained and fully compliant with housing and health & safety regulations. You will act as the main point of contact for residents on housing related matters (not personal care), helping maintain a supportive and well managed living environment.
This is a key operational role reporting to the Charity Manager.

Location & Pay

  • Location: On-site, Wokingham RG40 1YA
  • Contract: Permanent, Part time
  • Salary: £25,420 – £34,500 per year
  • Hours: 28 hours

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee day to day maintenance, repairs and servicing across almshouse buildings and grounds.
  • Maintain and deliver planned maintenance schedules, ensuring statutory compliance (fire safety, electrical, gas, water hygiene, alarms and emergency systems).
  • Carry out regular inspections to identify issues, risks or areas requiring attention.
  • Manage contractors and service providers, ensuring safe working practices, quality standards and value for money.
  • Respond to building related emergencies (leaks, outages, alarm activations) and maintain accurate incident records.
  • Keep clear, up to date maintenance and compliance records in SharePoint.
  • Prepare operational updates and reports for the Charity Manager and trustees.
  • Provide housing related inductions for new residents (property systems, safety, waste, repairs).
  • Communicate effectively with residents about maintenance, repairs and operational matters.
  • Signpost residents to external support services when appropriate (no personal care duties).
  • Support trustees with procurement, budgeting information and compliance monitoring.
  • Ensure all facilities operations meet charity, housing and almshouse regulatory requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:
  • Experience in facilities, property or housing maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Confidence managing contractors and overseeing maintenance works.
  • Good organisational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Clear, approachable communication style, particularly with older residents.
  • Practical, hands on problem solving ability.
  • Basic IT skills for record keeping and reporting (SharePoint, email, digital logs)
Desirable:
  • Experience in charitable or supported housing settings.
