About Wokingham United Charities
Wokingham United Charities is a long established charitable organisation, with origins dating back to 1451, serving residents across Wokingham Borough. We manage a substantial endowed fund to support people experiencing poverty, hardship or distress, and operate Wokingham Almshouses at Westende, providing 27 modern, self contained flats for older residents at below market maintenance contributions.
We are a values driven organisation with strong governance, registered with the Charity Commission and structured as a Company Limited by Guarantee. Our team works in a supportive, community focused environment dedicated to providing high quality accommodation and practical assistance for vulnerable residents.
Role Overview
As a Resident Liaison and Independent Living Coordinator, you will help residents enjoy independent living within our almshouse community by providing a welcoming and approachable point of contact, supporting communication and community engagement, and helping residents access appropriate information and external support when needed.
The role is part-time, working approximately 8–10 hours per week, with the working pattern arranged to provide regular contact with residents and some flexibility around resident and operational needs.
You will build positive relationships with residents, encourage independence and inclusion, and provide practical guidance and reassurance within clear professional boundaries. You will also be alert to safeguarding and wellbeing concerns, working closely with colleagues and relevant external services where appropriate.
This is an enabling and signposting role rather than a care role. The focus is on helping residents remain independent, make their own choices and access appropriate support when needed.
Location & Pay
- Location: On-site, Wokingham RG40 1YA
- Contract: Permanent, Part time
- Salary: £15 – £16 per hour
- Hours: 8-10 hours per week

Key Responsibilities
- Build positive relationships with residents and act as a regular point of contact for general enquiries.
- Help residents understand information, correspondence, services and processes relating to their home and the almshouse community.
- Provide information and signpost residents to appropriate health, wellbeing, financial, social and practical support, empowering them to access support independently wherever possible.
- Promote resident wellbeing, social connection and participation in community activities, helping to reduce isolation.
- Welcome new residents and support them to settle into the almshouse community.
- Work alongside the Facilities Supervisor and wider team to ensure residents receive clear information and updates on matters affecting their homes.
- Be alert to safeguarding and wellbeing concerns and report or escalate these in accordance with organisational procedures.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of resident enquiries, concerns, incidents and emerging themes.
- Support resident communications, activities and events, while encouraging residents to take an active role in their own community.
- Provide updates and reports to the Charity Manager and Trustees when required.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, a respectful and approachable manner, and the ability to build trusting relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries. You will be comfortable handling sensitive or difficult conversations, working independently, using sound judgement and maintaining accurate records. An understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to promoting dignity, independence and resident choice are also important.
Desirable:
Experience working with older people, vulnerable adults, housing, community development or resident engagement would be advantageous, as would knowledge of local support services and experience facilitating community activities or groups.
